How Device Assignment Works

Learn how Chromebooks are assigned to students, what happens when you get a new device, and how the replacement process works.

The 1:1 Program

At Fairfield Public Schools, most students are assigned their own personal Chromebook as part of our 1:1 (one-to-one) technology program. This means:

  • You have one specific Chromebook assigned to you
  • You're responsible for taking care of that device
  • The same device follows you throughout the school year
  • Your device is protected by your student account login

Getting Your First Device

  1. Device Distribution
At the start of the school year (or when you enroll), you'll receive a Chromebook from your school's Library/Media Center.
  2. Account Setup
Log in with your FPS student account. The device will automatically register to your account.
  3. Initial Check-in
You'll see a prompt asking you to confirm this is your device. Select "Yes" to complete the assignment.
  4. Start Using
Your Chromebook is now yours for the school year! Take good care of it.

Your Responsibilities

Care & Protection
  • Transport in a protective case/bag
  • Don't eat or drink near device
  • Keep away from extreme temperatures
  • Don't place heavy items on top
Daily Habits
  • Charge fully every night
  • Bring to school every day
  • Respond to check-in prompts
  • Report damage immediately

If Your Device Needs Repair

Accidents happen! If your Chromebook is damaged:

  1. Report the damage
Tell your teacher or visit the Library/Media Center right away. Don't try to fix it yourself!
  2. Get a loaner (if needed)
If repair will take time, you may receive a temporary loaner device.
  3. Device goes to repair
A technician will diagnose and fix the problem. This might take a few days.
  4. Get your device back
When repair is complete, you'll receive your device back and confirm it's yours via check-in.
About Insurance If your family purchased device insurance, repair costs may be covered. Contact the school office for details about your insurance status.

Device Replacement

Sometimes a device needs to be replaced rather than repaired:

Reasons for Replacement

  • Beyond repair - Damage is too severe to fix economically
  • End of life - Device is too old and no longer supported
  • Lost or stolen - Device cannot be recovered
  • Upgrade - New devices being deployed district-wide

The Replacement Process

  1. Your old device assignment is ended
  2. You receive a new Chromebook
  3. Log in to set up the new device
  4. Complete the initial check-in to confirm assignment
  5. Your files sync from Google Drive automatically

Multiple Device Situations

In some cases, a student might have access to more than one Chromebook:

Situation What Happens
Loaner while primary is repaired Temporary assignment - return when repair is done
Using classroom cart Chromebook Shared device - no assignment change
Found using someone else's device System alerts for investigation
One Device Rule Unless you have a loaner, you should only use YOUR assigned Chromebook. Using another student's device (even with permission) can cause confusion in our tracking system.

End of Year

At the end of the school year:

  • Devices may be collected for summer storage and maintenance
  • Some students may keep their device over summer (varies by school)
  • Graduating seniors turn in their Chromebooks
  • Transfers receive paperwork to take device to new school

Your Library/Media Specialist will communicate specific procedures for your school.
