Student Guide
This guide explains everything you need to know about your school Chromebook, including the device check-in system and what to do if you have questions.
What is the Device Check-in System?
Every Chromebook at Fairfield Public Schools has a small program that helps us keep track of devices and make sure the right student has the right Chromebook. This helps us:
- Make sure you have your assigned device
- Help find your Chromebook if it gets lost
- Fix problems faster when you need a repair
- Know when to replace older devices
The Check-in Prompt
About once every three months (or sometimes sooner), you'll see a message on your Chromebook asking you to confirm that the device you're using is your assigned device.
When you see a check-in prompt:
-
Read the message carefully
The prompt will show your device's serial number (found on a sticker on the back). -
Check the serial number
Look at the sticker on the back of your Chromebook. Does it match? -
Select your response
- "Yes, This Is My Device" - If the serial number matches your assigned Chromebook
- "No, I Have a Different Device" - If you're using a different Chromebook than usual
- "Not My Device" - If this isn't your assigned Chromebook at all
What If I Have the Wrong Device?
Sometimes students accidentally swap Chromebooks with a friend, or pick up the wrong device from a cart. If you discover you have the wrong Chromebook:
-
Tell your teacher or LMS staff
They can help you figure out what happened and get the right device. -
Check with classmates
If you recently switched with someone, ask if they have your Chromebook. -
Use the check-in prompt
Select "No, I Have a Different Device" when you see the prompt. This alerts IT that there may be a swap.
Important Things to Remember
- Respond to check-in prompts promptly
- Keep your Chromebook in your bag when not in use
- Report damage immediately
- Charge your device every night
- Only use YOUR assigned Chromebook
- Trade or swap Chromebooks with friends
- Ignore check-in prompts
- Use someone else's device without permission
- Remove any labels or stickers
- Leave your Chromebook unattended
