Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Chromebooks, device tracking, repairs, and more.

Device Check-ins

Check-in prompts appear every ~90 days to verify you still have your assigned device. If you're seeing them more frequently, it might be because:
  • You haven't responded to previous check-ins
  • You're using a different device than expected
  • Your device was recently repaired or reassigned
Responding promptly will reduce the number of prompts you see.

If you accidentally selected the wrong option, visit your school's Library/Media Center. They can review your assignment and correct any errors. Don't worry - mistakes happen and can be fixed!

Your Chromebook's serial number is on a sticker on the back/bottom of the device. It usually looks like 5CD425J71C. You can also find it by going to Chrome Settings > About Chrome OS > Additional details.

Device Swaps

Our system can detect when devices have been swapped. If this happens:
  1. You may see a check-in prompt asking about your device
  2. Select "No, I Have a Different Device"
  3. Work with your teacher or LMS to find the other student and swap back
It's not a big deal - just swap them back as soon as you notice!

Accidental swaps happen and are not punished. The goal is simply to get the right device back to the right student. However, intentionally trading devices or refusing to swap back could result in a conversation with your teacher or administrator.

Repairs & Damage

Report damage immediately! Don't wait or try to fix it yourself.
  1. Tell your teacher about the damage
  2. Visit the Library/Media Center for assessment
  3. A repair ticket will be created
  4. You may receive a loaner if repair will take time
Early reporting often means faster repair!

It depends on several factors:
  • Insurance: If your family purchased device insurance, many repairs are covered
  • Normal wear: Regular wear and tear is usually covered by the school
  • Negligence: Intentional damage or negligence may result in charges
Contact your school office to check your insurance status.

Repair times vary depending on the damage and parts availability:
  • Minor issues: Same day to a few days
  • Screen replacement: 2-5 days typically
  • Major repairs: 1-2 weeks
If parts need to be ordered, repairs may take longer. You'll receive a loaner device if the repair will be extended.

Account & Login

No, you should only use YOUR assigned Chromebook. Using another student's device (even with their permission) creates confusion in our tracking system. If you need a device temporarily, ask about a loaner from the Library/Media Center.

Your school Chromebook is assigned to you and your student account. While light family use (like looking something up) is generally fine, your sibling should use their own assigned device for schoolwork. Each student's account should only be used by that student.

Your Chromebook uses your FPS Google account. If you forget your password:
  1. Try your school ID number as the password (new accounts)
  2. Ask your teacher to help reset it
  3. Visit the school office or Library/Media Center
Never share your password with other students!

Summer & Year End

This varies by school and grade level. Your school will communicate their specific policy. Common scenarios:
  • Some schools allow summer take-home
  • Some collect devices for maintenance
  • Graduating students always return devices
Listen for announcements from your school about year-end procedures.

Graduating students: Return your Chromebook and charger to the school before the end of the year. Check with your school about specific return dates.

Transfers within district: Check with both schools - you may keep your device or receive a new one at the new school.

Leaving district: Return your device and charger before your last day.
